The circulatory system Flashcards
Purpose of circulatory system
To deliver oxygen, nutrients, and hormones and removes waste products from cells.
Why is oxygen important
It is required in cellular respiration which provides energy for your cells, and your whole body
Components of System
Heart
Blood Vessels
Blood
Red Blood Cell
Carries oxygen and carbon dioxide
Iron sticks to hemoglobin, oxygen sticks to iron
White Blood Cell
Helps the body fight infection
Engulfs the bacteria and digests it with enzymes
Platelets
Blood cells that form clots and stop bleeding in vessels.
Blood Plasma
The Liquid portion of blood which platelets and red, white blood cells are suspended in.
The Heart
Pumps Blood around the system
What is heart made of
Cardiac Muscle
Never tires as heart needs to be constantly pumping
The heart is essentially what?
Two pump
Each pump has how many chambers
Two, a ventricle and an artery
Atrium
Chamber where blood is stored while ventricle is relaxing
They are out of sync
Ventricle
Pumps blood into the arteries when atrium is full.
Right side vs left side
Left side receives oxygen rich blood from lungs, pumps it to body
Right side receives oxygen poor blood from body, pumps it to lungs
Arteries
Carries blood away from the heart
Transports blood under higher pressure since there is blood being pumped through them and they are very narrow.
