REFORMATION
The term used to describe Henry VIII’s break from the Roman Catholic Church to create the Church of England.
Great Chain of Being
The hierarchical structure of all matter and life - decreed by God.
The chain starts with God and progresses downward to angels, demons (fallen/renegade angels), stars, moon, kings, princes, nobles, commoners, wild animals, domesticated animals etc
CHANTRY
An endowment (financial gift) for the singing or saying of Mass for the souls of the founders or of persons named by them. A key way for the RC church to gain wealth.
INDULGENCES
The RC Church sold these s “a way to reduce the amount of punishment one has to undergo for sins
Requiem for the Dead
A special mass for those who had donated personal items to the church - they would be remembered for their generosity.
VESTMENTS
The robes worn by members of the clergy of the RC Church - often very elaborate
CELIBACY
An oath made by RC priests not to marry - they had dedicated their lives to God.
ROOD SCREEN
A screen to separate the clergy from the congregation - it added to the ‘theatre’ of church services (criticised by reformers)
SUBMISSION
The idea that ordinary people would ‘sumbit’ to the authority of the church in order to ensure their souls were saved.
SACRAMENTS
Special ceremonies wherby God’s goodness / greatness was ‘revealed’
