The Chemical Basis Of Life Flashcards
Define Element
Substance that cannot be broken down to other substances by ordinary chemical means
Define- Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
State that the six most common elements in living things are
C, H, N, O, S and P
C-Carbon H-Hydrogen N-Nitrogen O-Oxygen S-Sulfur P-Potassium
Define compound
Substance consisting of 2 or more different elements combined in a fixed ratio.
Atom
smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of an element
Proton
Positive Charge (+)
Electron
Negative Charge (-)
Nuetron
No Charge
Nucleus
atom’s central core
Atomic number
number of protons
mass number
sum of protons and neutrons in its nucleus
Isotope
All the atoms of an element have the same atomic number(number of protons) but some atoms of an element may differ in mass number(sum of protons and neutrons in its nucleus)
Ion
an atom or molecule with an electrical charge resulting from a gain or loss of one or more electrons
Ionic Bond
Ion #1 gives up an electron(making it positive) to ion#2(making it negative) and the the 2 attract. TRANSFER
Covalent Bond
Two atoms share one or more pairs of outer shell electrons.
