revolution in russia demantolisng monarcy and being replaced with communist goverenemnt sent shockwaves around world , esp in capaitlist USA. workers on stirke in large numbers due to bad condition make people fear uprising. comunist party if america and commnusit labour party both founded 1919 , one in four workers went on strike , people began to accuse eachother of communsim and try to hunt down communist - known as RED HUNTING , peoepl suspected of left wing beliefs could be fired and people no longer felt safe to express their views
depression and unrest 1919-21
between end of ww1 and when harding took power there had been a short sharp depression , unemployment rose , lots of social discontent ; protests , riots , strikes. farmers had produced wheat with machines in war so less farmers need but now over producing , prices fell and many farmers went bankrupt. laissez faire policy meant gov didnt intervene , luckily depression sorted itself out , which would have big impact on government thinking
