The Cervical Spine :Muscle and Neurological Testing Flashcards
How do you perform a muscle test for the SCM and the scalenes
Cl supine
shoulders ext rot + abd to 90 degrees + elbows flexed to 90 degrees resting on the table
(this stabilizes the shoulder and reduces any compensatory movements)
Head is rotated Contralaterally
Thera resists against temporal region cl tries to anterolaterally flex the neck.
What position should the shoulder be in when performing a Muscle test of the SCM or scalenes?
Cl supine
shoulder ext rot and flexed 90 degrees
elbow bent 90 degrees
How do you perform a muscle test on the posterolateral extensors of the neck?
Cl prone
shoulders and elbows bent at 90 degrees resting on table
head is ipsilaterally rotated and slightly ext
Thera resists against the posterolateral aspect of the head in the an anterior direction
How does the muscle test for upper traps and posterolateral extensors differ?
Same position but…
posterolateral ext = ipsi rot of head
upper traps = contralateral rot
of head
How do you perform a muscle test for the upper trapezius?
Cl high seated
with ipsi acromion elevated and the neck posterolaterally extended and contralaterally rotated. The therapist attempts to depress the scapula and anterolaterally flex the neck
How do you perform a muscle test for the levator scapula?
Cl prone
neck rotated ipsila
shoulder add slightly laterally rotated and extended
elbow is fully flexed
cl attempts to hold this position
therapist attempts abd of shoulder with resistance at the elbow and to depress the scapula with resistance at the acromion
C1/C2 myotome testing
resisted head nodding
C3 myotome testing
resisted cervical side bending
C4 myotome testing
resisted shoulder/ scapular elevation
C5 myotome testing
resisted shoulder abduction
C6 myotome testing
resisted elbow flexion or wrist extension
C7 myotome testing
resisted elbow extension or wrist flexion
C8 myotome testing
resisted flexion of fingers
T1 myotome testing
resisted abd of the little finger
Ulnar nerve myotome testing
resisted abd of little finger
