the cerebral cortex Flashcards
state the function of the cerebral cortex
The cerebral cortex is the centre of conscious thought. It also recalls memories and alters behaviour in the light of experience
Explain the localisation of brain functions in the cerebral cortex
There is localisation of brain functions in the cerebral cortex. It contains sensory areas (which receive nervous impulses, which carry information about the environment, from sense organs), motor areas (send nervous impulses to the muscles and glands to bring about responses) and association areas (that link up with parts of the cortex that are involved in language and in the processing of information). Association areas are important in personality, imagination and intelligence.
Describe how the left and right cerebral hemispheres process information
The left cerebral hemisphere deals with information from the right visual field and controls the right-hand side of the body.
The right cerebral hemisphere deals with information from the left visual field and controls the left-hand side of the body.
State the function of the corpus callosum
The corpus callosum connects the two hemispheres together, allowing information to be transported between them
