the cerebral cortex 3.2 Flashcards
how is the brain divided
divided into three interconnected layers
- the central core (medulla and cerebrum)
- the limbic system
- the cerebral cortex (outer layer of cerebrum)
cerebral cortex
the largest and most complex part of the brain and is the centre of conscious thought, it recalls memories and alters behaviour in light of experience
where are the localisation of brain functions
the cerebral cortex
the three areas of localisation of brain functions
sensory area, association area and motor area
sensory area of the localisation of brain functions
receives information as sensory impulses from body’s receptors and send them to associated areas
association area of the localisation of brain functions
analyse and interpret impulses and ‘take decisions’ if necessary, there are association areas involved with language, personality, imagination and intelligence
motor area of the localisation of brain functions
received info from association areas and send motor impulses to effectors in skeletal muscles to bring about a response
how does the brain process information
information from one side of the body is processed in the opposite side of the cerebrum, the left cerebral hemisphere deals with information from the right visual field and controls the right side of the body and vice versa
how does information transfer between the cerebral hemispheres
through the corpus callosum which is a large bundle of nerve fibres connecting the two hemispheres
