The Central Nervous System: Flashcards
What does the Brain do?
Involved in all aspects of human behaviour. Where decisions are made. 2 Hemispheres.
What’s the function of the Frontal Lobe?
Involved in higher cognitive functioning such as problem solving, decision making and reasoning, as well as motor skills, and expressive language.
What’s the function of the Parietal Lobe?
Involved in processing information from the senses, including having an important role in language processing.
What’s the Occipital Lobe?
Involved in the visual processing of information, including; visuo-spatial processing, colour differentiation, and motion perception.
What’s the Temporal Lobe?
Deals with hearing, some aspects of language and memory making.
What’s the function of the Cerebellum?
Plays an important role in motor control, co-ordination of movements as well as motor learning.
What’s the function of the Spinal Cord?
The transmission of nerve signals from the body to the brain.
What does the Left Hemisphere control?
Sensory stimulus from the right side. Motor control. Speech, language. comprehension, Recognition of words etc..
What does the Left Hemisphere control?
Sensory stimulus from the left side. Motor control, creativity, spatial ability, recognition of faces, etc..
What’s the function of the Corpus Callosum?
Connects the two hemispheres and enables communication between the two (“information highway”).
What’s the function of the Thalamus?
The brains relay station. Passes on information from the senses.
What’s the function of the Hypothalamus?
Regulates eating, drinking and release of sex hormones (e.g. testosterone, oestrogen).
What’s the function of the Amygdala?
Primary role in the processing of emotional responses, memory and decision-making.
What’s the function of the Hippocampus?
Responsible for memory consolidation, navigation and spatial awareness.
What’s the function of the Basal Ganglia?
Processing information on movement and planning responses. It is also linked to habit learning and reward
