The Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
Why do cells divide?
They grow too big or have to make more cells
What happens to the surface and volume ratio as a cell gets larger?
The ratio decreases
What part of the cell represents surface area?
The cell membrane
What part of the cell represents volume?
The cytoplasm
What are the two stages of cell division?
Mitosis and cytokinesis
What are the four stages of mitosis?
Prophase, anaphase, metaphase, and telophase
What are the four stages of the cell cycle?
G1, S, G2, and M
Which proteins regulate the cell cycle?
Cyclins
What is cancer?
Unregulated cell growth and division
What are tumors?
A mass of tissue made from uncontrolled cell growth and division.
What is apoptosis?
Programmed cell death
What happens in prophase?
Chromatin condenses into chromosomes, centrioles separate and spindle shape forms, and Nucleolus disappears.
What happens in metaphase?
Chromosomes line up at center of the cell and are connected to spindle fibers at the centromere.
What happens in anaphase?
Sister chromatids separate into single chromosomes and move apart.
What happens in telophase?
Two nuclear envelopes form and chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell.
