The Cell Cycle And Differentiation Flashcards
1
Q
The cell cycle
A
- the process that all body cells from multicellular organisms to grow and divide
- starts when cells have been produced by cell division and ends with the cell dividing into 2 identical cells
2
Q
Interphase
A
- cell carries out normal functions whilst preparing to divide
- DNA unravels and replicates to double genetic content
- organelles replicate and ATP content increased
3
Q
Mitosis

Q
How is DNA replicated?
Semi-conservative replication
A
- 1- DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds. The helix unzips to form 2 single stands
- 2- single strands act as a template for a new strand. Free-floating DNA joins to exposed bases
- 3- nucleotides on new strands join by the enzyme DNA polymerase. Hydrogen bonds form.
- each new DNA molecule contains 1 original strand and 1 new strand
