The Cell (Ch5) Flashcards
Chromoplast (60)
Stores carotenoids pigments and are responsible for the orange-yellow coloring of carrots, tomatoes, etc to attract pollinating insects
Leucoplast (60)
Colorless and store starch in plants; found in roots, like turnips, or in tubers, like potatoes
Microtubules (61)
Thick hollow tubes that make up the cilia, flagella, and spindle fibers
Microfilaments (61)
Made of the protein actin and help support the shape of the cell; enables cleavage furrows, amoeba movement through pseudopods, and skeletal muscles to contract by sliding along myosin filaments
Chromatin network (58)
Chromosomes made of DNA that is wrapped with special proteins called histones
Plastids (60)
Found in plants and algae; have a double membrane; includes chloroplasts, leucoplasts, and chromoplasts
Centrioles / Centrosomes (61)
Outside the nuclear envelope and organize the spindle fibers; only in animal cells; two centrioles at right angles make one centrosome; one centriole has nine triplets of microtubules
Cilia / Flagella (61)
Cilia are short, flagella are long; both have 9 pairs of micro tubules around 2 singlet micro tubules (9 + 2)
Chitin (62)
Makes up cell walls of fungi
Cellulose (62)
Makes up the cell walls of plants and algae
Middle lamella (62)
A thin gluey layer formed between the two cell walls (primary and secondary) that keeps daughter cells attached
Cytosol (62)
The semiliquid portion of the cytoplasm (which is the region between the nucleus and plasma membrane)
Cyclosis (62)
A process where organelles are suspended in the cytosol and get carried around the cell as the cytoplasm cycles
