The cell Flashcards
what is a cell
-It is the basic unit of life
-all multicellular organisms are made up of millions of cells
Organisation of life
atoms- molecules- organelles- cells- tissue- organs- organ systems- organisms
Organelle
Structures inside cells that perform specific functions. Eg: chloroplast and mitochondria
Tissue
Groups of the same cells, with the same structure that work together to perform a common function. Eg: a group of stomach muscle cells called stomach muscle tissue
Organ
Different tissues that work together to perform a common function
Organ Systems
Different organs that work togther to perform a common function
Cell Wall
-Only found in plant cells
-Surrounds the outside of the cell
-Made of cellulose
-None living, rigid and strong
- Function: provide shape strength and protection to the cell
Cell Membrane
-Both plans and animal cells
-Surrounds cytoplasm, and is situated just inside the cell wall
-Living, thin, elastic
-Function: controls the movement of the substances in and out of cells
Selective Permeable
Selects what goes in and out
Cytoplasm
-All organelle float in the cytoplasm
-Jelly like medium
-Makes up majority of the cell content
Vacuole
-Large permanent: plant cell
-Small temporary: animal cells
-large spaces in the cytoplasm, surrounded by tonoplast( vacuoles membrane). Space is filled with dissolved water, mineral salts, waste, and starch(cell sap).
-Function: acts as storage space for water and dissolves substances. Maintains tugor pressure on association with the cell wall
Tugor Pressure
The pressure exerted by the vacuole and cell wall to keep the cell rigid
Chloroplast
-Only in plants
-Contains chlorophyll (green pigment) that traps radiant and light energy
-Function: perform photosynthesis. Glucose is stores as starch in the vacuoles of plant cells.
Nucleus
-Filled with nucleoplasm
-Surrounded by a nuclear membrane
-Contains DNA that carries all your hereditary information
-Function: controls hereditary characteristics
Controls all functions of the cell
Mitochondrion
- Rod shaped organelle that occurs in both animal and plant cells
-Has a folded inner membrane and a smooth outer membrane
-Function:Perform respiration
Provides cells with energy in the form of ATP
