The Cell Flashcards
What is the cuticle?
Outside protective layer , overlapping scales that open and close
What is the cortex?
Middle layer , where colour pigments are found, protects the organ called the medulla.
What is the medulla?
Where your brain and spinal cord connects. Sends nerve signals to and from body.
What is intracellular fluid?
Fluid between cells , contains organelles. All have special functions
What is the cell membrane?
Thin flexible barrier around a cell. Regulates what enters and leaves the cell. Keeps shape of cell.
What is the cytoplasm?
Jelly like fluid inside a cell that moves organelles apart from the nucleus
What is the nucleus?
Largest organelle. Control centre of cells. Contains body’s genetic material. The nucleus of a cell contains 46 chromosones made up of DNA. Main function is to synthesise ribosomes
What are ribosomes?
A small organelle. Involved in process of making protein. Float about the body.
What is the mitochondria?
Powerhouse cell. Tiny organelles inside cells that are invoked in releasing energy from food
What is the Golgi apparatus?
Prepares proteins and molecules for use in other places inside and outside of the cell
What is mitosis?
The process in which cells divide
What are the Stages of mitosis?
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
what is the interphase?
Phase of cell cycle where a cell spends most of its life.
What is the Prophase?
First phase of mitosis. Process that splits the generic material of a parent cell into two daughter cells
What is the metaphase?
Stage of mitosis where chromosomes Go to the middle of cell before it is separated into the two daughter cells.
