The courts of inquisition:
- The church set up a court to try people who held views that were different to that of the Catholic church.
What happened when people were found guilty?
They could be fined, flogged, imprisoned or burned at the stake. The burnings were done in public as a threat to others.
What’s a another word for burning at the stake?
An Auto-da-fé
New religious orders:
- The church realised that it needed to reconnect with its committed and faithful believers. Therefore, new religious orders were set up.
What religious order was founded in 1534?
Jesuits by ignatius Loyola
What did Jesuits do?
The travelled around carrying out missionary work (going to other countries to teach about Christianity). They went to the new world converting the natives to Catholicism.
What were Jesuits like?
They excelled in education. They founded schools. Their ideas are well ahead of their time and so their students were well educated.
The council of Trent:
It was a meeting of leading cardinals and bishops to tackle issues that currently existed in the church and to respond to the reformation’s attack on its teachings.
When did the council meet?
3 times between 1545 and 1563
