Q

What is substantivity?

A

It is the time that a drug is in contact with a particular substrate in the oral cavity. It reflects the reversible binding to the oral reservoirs and the rate of clearance by salivary flow

Q

What does chlorhexidine do?

A

Well it binds to the phospholipids in the inner membrane, ruptures it, and lets the bacteria’s insides leak out.
It also binds to salivary mucins, thereby inhibiting bacteria attachment to the pellicle.
It also binds to the bacteria themselves to prevent attachment to teeth and colonization.
It acts on both gram negative and gram positive bacteria, but it stains teeth and you don’t use it unless you have a prescription
