The caries lecture Flashcards
Alright, if we’ve already learned it I’m not making a card for it.
You got it boss. I’m just here to learn.
Phosphate is a ______.
Base
The lower the pH the less _____ will be available.
PO4- phosphate
Substitution of some of the hydroxyls in the hydroxyapatite lattice of tooth enamel with fluoride increases the resistance of enamel to demineralization under mildly acidic conditions.
Satisfactory explanations for this effect have not yet been provided.
Great.
Are drugs absorbed very well in the oral cavity?
Indeed they are good sir or madam! It is due to the thinness of the epithelium.
T/F the ability of oral agents to bind reversibly to oral reservoirs is an important quality for sustained release oral drugs.
True
What is the major determinant of the duration that a drug remains in contact with the surface of the tooth?
Salivary flow
What is substantivity?
It is the time that a drug is in contact with a particular substrate in the oral cavity. It reflects the reversible binding to the oral reservoirs and the rate of clearance by salivary flow
What does chlorhexidine do?
Well it binds to the phospholipids in the inner membrane, ruptures it, and lets the bacteria’s insides leak out.
It also binds to salivary mucins, thereby inhibiting bacteria attachment to the pellicle.
It also binds to the bacteria themselves to prevent attachment to teeth and colonization.
It acts on both gram negative and gram positive bacteria, but it stains teeth and you don’t use it unless you have a prescription
Triclosan, it’s found in all kinds of stuff. What does it do in mouthwash and toothpaste?
It inhibits fatty acid synthesis- thereby being bacteriostatic
Name a phenolic compound.
Listerine
Crest pro health is a ______ ______. What does it do?
It is a quaternary amine.
It is an antiseptic that kills bacteria and other microorganisms. Can prevent dental plaque from forming and reduces gingivitis
What do morpholinos do?
They keep bacteria from attaching to the surface of the teeth. It’s a cationic surfactant.
_______ is the gold standard for plaque reduction, gingivitis reduction, and maximum reduction in BOP. The next best are mouthwashes containing _____ ______.
Chlorhexidine
Essential oils
