The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the Cardiovascular System responsible for?
Transporting blood throughout the body
What do arteries do?
Carry oxygen-rich blood away from heart
What does it deliver?
Oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the body tissue + organs
What is Plasma composed of?
Water, portions, hormones, electrolytes and other nutrients
What does the heart do?
Pump blood throughout the body
What does Plasma help with?
to transport nutrients, waste products and hormones throughout the body
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, veins and capillaries
What is heart rate?
the number of times the heart beats per minute
What is cardiac output?
the amount of blood pumped out of the left ventricle per minute
What are Platelets?
They are small, disc-like cells that help stop bleeding by forming blood clots
What is stroke volume?
the amount of blood pumped out of the left ventricle per beat
How do Platelets stop bleeding?
By sticking together and forming mesh-like plugs that deal the injured vessel
What do veins do?
carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
What is Plasma?
It is the liquid component of blood that makes up 55% of total blood volume
What are white blood cells responsible for?
protecting the body against infections and diseases
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Right atrium, Right ventricle, Left atrium and Left ventricle
What does it consist of?
the heart, blood vessels and blood
What do red blood cells contain?
they contain a protein which binds with oxygen and transports it from the lungs to the body
They also remove CO2 from the body
What are blood vessels?
a network of tubes that carry blood throughout the body
What do capillaries do?
the smallest vessel, exchange between the blood and the body’s tissue
