The carbon cycle vocab Flashcards
carbon
A naturally abundant, nonmetallic element that occurs in all organic compounds and can be found in all known forms of life
atmosphere
The blanket of gas on the surface of a planet or satellite
biosphere
The parts of the land, sea, and atmosphere in which organisms are able to live
Geosphere/lithosphere
The geosphere is the collective name for the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the cryosphere, and the atmosphere.
hydrosphere
the total amount of water on a planet.
carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas found in our atmosphere. Its chemical formula is CO2
cellular respiration
the process of breaking sugar into a form that the cell can use as energy. This happens in all forms of life.
photosynthesis
the process by which plants and other things make food.
decomposition
The separation of a substance into simpler substances or basic elements or the process of decaying or rotting
sedimentation
any particulate matter that can be transported by fluid flow and which eventually is deposited as a layer of solid particles on the bed or bottom of a body of water or other liquid.
