The Carbon Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
The Atmosphere
A
Layers of gases that surround Earth.
- Example: Troposphere-
- Where weather occurs
- Where we live/where life is
2
Q
Carbon
A
Chemical element
3
Q
Biosphere
A
area of the planet where organisms live
4
Q
Geosphere
A
regions matter that makes up the earth (rock)
5
Q
Hydrosphere
A
all the waters on the earth’s surface, and over the earth’s surface (clouds)
6
Q
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
A
- It is a Greenhouse gas
- Plants use it for Photosynthesis
- Is involved with Climate change, and greenhouse effect (fossil fuel exhaust)
7
Q
Cellular Respiration
A
- cells take in Oxygen and Glucose sugar and break it down to produce carbon dioxide, water and\ stored energy
- O2 + C6-H12-O6 ➡ CO2, H2O, ATP
8
Q
Photosynthesis
A
- Plants take in carbon dioxide and water and use light to convert to Oxygen and Glucose
- CO2 + H2O (Using Sunlight)➡ O2 + C6-H12-O6
- In the summer/spring, the amount of carbon goes down the atmosphere (tree leaves taking in the CO2)
- In the winter/fall, the amount of carbon goes up the atmosphere (tree leave die; can’t take in the CO2)
9
Q
Decomposition
A
Rotting/decaying
10
Q
Sedimentation
A
The layering of different dead or decaying organisms and/or rock, silt, or mud.
11
Q
Climate Change
A
the changing of temperature in the different climate and/or different areas of the world over a period of time.
12
Q
Greenhouse Gases
A
- Trap warm air from rising out of earth’s atmosphere
- Absorbs infrared radiation
- Examples: carbon, Methane, Nitrous Oxide
13
Q
Fossil Fuels
A
- Examples: Natural Gas, Coal, Crude Oil
- Made from dead geological remains of living organisms.
- Burned to produce energy (heat, electricity)
