The carbon cycle Flashcards
What are the processes involved in the carbon cycle?
-photosynthesis
-respiration
-consumption,
-decomposition,
-combustion
What is the photosynthesis equation?
Photosynthesis = 6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H 12O6 +6O2
What is the respiration equation?
Respiration = C6H12O6 +6O2 —> 6CO2 +6 H2O
Why is carbon important?
- Main component of all living cells
-Component of fuel
Photosynthesis
-Plants take in water from the soil through their roots
-CO2 comes from the air in through the leaves
-They use sunlight energy to rearrange these into their own molecules of glucose
Respiration
A chemical reaction releases energy (in the form of ATP)
Consumption
-Organisms eat plants/other animals
-They digest it and use it to make molecules
Decomposition
-Decomposers breakdown dead material and respire to release CO2 e.g. bacteria and fungi
Combustion
Burning fossil fuels, releases CO2
Why are carbon dioxide levels rising?
-Combustion – burning fossil fuels, cars
-Deforestation – cutting down trees, using the spare space for houses
How can we reduce global warming?
- Plant trees
- Drive less
-Switch to renewable energy
What is the only process in the carbon cycle that removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis
Which three groups of living organisms respire in the carbon cycle?
Plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi
Decomposers breakdown, dead organic material into small soluble molecules. Give two different uses for these molecules.
-Taken up by plant roots
-Release CO2 into the atmosphere
