Q
  1. ‘Wah Diddy Diddy, Baby Love, Oh Pretty Woman’
  2. ’ I lived in a kind of fizzing hope. Gargling (enjab) with Vimto’
  3. ‘The clever smell of my satchel. Convent girls’
  4. ‘like Mick, my lips numb as a two hour snog’
A
  1. Titles and song lyrics allude to the 1960s, presents the persona as an obssessive hoarder of knowledge, the caesura represents their thought process.
  2. Model of his life, ‘fizzy’ represents something sweet and exciting however all things fizzy go flat, describing his descent since his peak in 1964. ‘Vimto’ represents the consumerism craze, a new brand, revolutionary.
  3. Paradox and impossibility, synesthesia relating to an educational environment that the persona thrived in education. The religious segregation of the genders.
  4. Mick Jagger referred to as ‘rubber lips’ once again demonstrates the persona’s thirst for knowledge.

Q
  1. ‘No snags. The Nile rises in April. Blue and white.’
  2. ‘In class, the white sleeve (enjab) of my shirt saluted again and again’
  3. ‘dominus, domine, domninum’
A
  1. Triplet of answers, facts that are not connected. Perhaps used to criticise the educational system on how children are taught futile facts with no relevance to eachother.
  2. Regimental imagery demonstrates the persona’s dedication to his education, he is a soldier saluting to education. White collar jobs vs blue collar jobs, sly dig at the class system.
  3. His extensive knowledge is limited as Latin is usually associated with olden times, showing his knowledge is outdated in an evolving society. Latin is also a symbol of the higher class which depicts the persona’s fortunate background. The school day is compartmentalised which links back to the structured military imagery (perhaps another critique of education?).
