What is Ascetism?
living a simple and strict lifestyle with few pleasures or possessions with the belief that extreme self-discipline can lead to spiritual wisdom.
Why did Siddhartha live as an ascetic?
He was impressed by the sense of peace coming from the holy man who was an ascetic. This inspired him to follow ascetic practices to try to overcome suffering.
Why did Siddhartha turn away from ascetism?
He became very thin and weak as he ate very little, and could not meditate effectively.
He did not find the answer to the problem of suffering.
How did Mara try and distract Siddhartha from his meditation?
Sent his beautiful daughters to seduce him.
Sent his armies to throw arrows at him.
Offered Siddhartha control of his kingdom.
How did Siddhartha respond to Mara’s tactics?
He was not tempted by Mara’s daughters and continued meditating.
The arrows turned to lotus flowers they could reach him.
What are the Three watches of the night?
1.Siddhartha gained knowledge of all his past lives.
2.He understood the cycle of Samsara and that beings are reborn according to their actions.
3.He understood that beings suffer because of desire and attachment.
