The Brain and Nervous System Flashcards
Brain Stem
located at the top of the spine and bottom of the brain (in charge of basic life support functions)
Limbic System
sits at the top of the brain stem, regulates our emotions
Cerebellum
sits at the back of the brain, involved with movement and posture
Cerebrum
responsible for the 5 senses, manages all thoughts, has 2 hemispheres
Corpus Callosum
thick bundle of axons connecting the 2 hemispheres
Occipital Lobe
located at the back of the cerebral cortex, involved in vision
Temporal Lobe
located on the underside of the cerebral cortex, where sounds and smells, memory, and language comprehension are processed
Parietal Lobe
located at the upper back of the cerebral cortex, where touch, taste, and pain are processed
Frontal Lobe
located at the forward part of the cerebral cortex, where behavioral motor plans, speech, language, creative problem solving, planning, and organization are processed
Primary Motor Cortex
in charge of voluntary movements
Peripheral Nervous System
a network of nerves that travel to each part of the body that carries the signals necessary for the body to survive
PET
records metabolic activity in the brain by injecting a radioactive substance into the bloodstream
fMRI
measures changes in the levels of naturally occurring oxygen in the blood
EEG
measure electrical brain activity instead of blood flow
Major Areas of the Brain Are:
Brain Stem, Limbic System, and Cerebral Cortex
Amygdala
(limbic sustem) emotion, fear, anger
Hypothalamus
(limbic system) regulates body temp and hunger
Hippocampus
(limbic system) memory
Thalamus
(limbic system) relays sensory info to the cortices where they are processed
Left Side of Brain
speech, language, analysis, calculations, time
Right Side of Brain
creativity, spatial ability, context, perception, recognition of faces, places, objects
Hearing Process
auditory hair cells- cochlear nerve- thalamus- auditory cortex
How does smell happen?
Through the inhalation of odor molecules
How does Taste happen?
through chemicals from food/drink being released into the mouth
