The Brain - Anatomy & Function Flashcards
What is the hindbrain anatomy?
The first part of the brain coming up from the spine and consists of the brain stem and cerebellum.
What parts of the brain does the hindbrain anatomy control?
The pons
Cerebellum
Medulla oblongata
What does the pons connect to?
The cerebral cortex and the cerebellum
What is the pons involved in?
Regulation of respiration
Control of involuntary actions
Helps regulate sleep
What is the cerebellum involved in?
Motor control
Language
Attention
Mental imagery
Coordination
Sleep
What is the medulla oblongata involved in?
Functions of the autonomous nervous system - heart rate, blood pressure and reflexes.
What does damage to the medulla oblongata result in?
Respiratory failure, cardiac arrest and shock (can result in death)
Which parts of the brain does the midbrain (mesencephalon) anatomy contain?
Reticular formation
Tectum
Substantia nigra
What is the reticular formation responsible for?
Consciousness, sleep, somatic motor control, cardiovascular control, habituation and attention.
What does damage to the reticular formation result in?
Sleep problems, coma or attentional issues.
What is the tectum responsible for?
Auditory and visual reflexes.
What are the four mounds on the tectum and what are they responsible for?
Corpora quadrigemina
- the superior colliculi is responsible for visual information
- the inferior colliculi is involved in auditory information
What is the substantia nigra and what is it involved in?
A basal ganglia (mid brain)
Eye movement, motor planning, learning and reward-seeking
What parts do the forebrain anatomy contain?
The cerebrum which is comprised of two cerebral hemispheres
