The Brain Flashcards
What is the meninges?
A three-layer membrane that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord.
What is the cerebrospinal fluid?
Fluid that circulates between the meninges (brain) and spinal cord; a shock absorber and transport medium.
What is the cerebrum?
The largest part of the brain that stores sensory info and initiates voluntary motor activities.
What is the cerebral cortex?
The outer layer of the cerebrum, made up of grey matter folds (fissures).
List the function of the frontal lobe
Controls movement of voluntary muscles and responsible for intellectual activities and personality.
List the function of the temporal lobe
Associated with vision, hearing, memory, and interpretation of sensory info.
List the function of the pariental lobe
Associated for touch and temperature awareness, emotions, and interpreting speech.
List the function of the occipital lobe
Responsible for vision and interpretting visual information.
What is the corpus callosum?
A bundle of nerves that allows communication between the right and left hemisphere.
What is the thalamus?
Directs sensory info to the cerebrum.
What is the hypothalamus?
Maintain’s the body’s internal balance.
What is the olfactory bulbs?
Receive and interpret info about smell.
What is the cerebellum?
Controls limb moverments, balance, and muscle tone.
What is the pons?
Passes information between the cerebellum and medulla.
What is the medulla oblongata?
Connects the spinal cord to the cerebellum and a site of autonomic nerve control.
