The Brain Flashcards
(24 cards)
Frontal Lobe
Front part of brain
Parietal Lobe
Middle section of brain
Occipital Lobe
Back section of brain
Temporal Lobe
Side sections of brain (1 on each side)
Central Sulcus
Separation between frontal and parietal lobes
What is another name for the Postcentral Gyrus and what does it do?
Primary Somatosensory Cortex; receives sensory information such as temperature, touch, pressure, pain
Where is the Cerebellum located and what does it do?
It is under the occipital lobes at the back of the brain; responsible for coordinating movement and managing balance and posture
Where is the spinal cord located?
Comes out of the brain below the cerebellum
Lateral Fissure
Separates the frontal and parietal lobes from the temporal lobe
What is another name for the precentral gyrus and what does it do?
Primary motor cortex; controls voluntary movements
Superior Frontal Sulcus
Separates the middle frontal gyrus from superior frontal gyrus
What is the gyrus?
The surface of the brain (cerebrum) folded into ridges
What is the sulcus?
The grooves separating the gyrus
Middle Frontal Gyrus
Involved in storage of spacial information
Superior Frontal Gyrus
Involved in self-awareness or brain’s working memory
Parieto-occipital Sulcus
Divides the occipital from the parietal lobe
What and where are the Occipital pole and the frontal pole?
The frontal pole is the most anterior point of the brain and the occipital pull is the most posterior point of the brain.
Longitudinal Fissure
Divides the two cerebral hemispheres
Lateral Sulcus
A deep cleft dividing frontal and parietal lobes from temporal lobe
Medulla Oblongata
The lowest part of the brain stem; continues down to form the spinal cord; contains centers that control breathing, heart rate, blood pressure
Where is the Medulla Oblongata and what does it control?
It is the lowest part of the brain stem that continues down to form spinal cord; it controls breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
Superior Temporal Gyrus
Includes primary auditory cortex where sensory information related to hearing is received
Pons
Part of the brain stem between the midbrain and medulla
Optic Nerve
Second cranial nerve carrying nerve fibers from retina to optic chiasma
