The Brain Flashcards
What are the 6 parts of the brain?
1.Frontal lobe
2.Parietal lobe
3.Occipital lobe
4.Temporal lobe
5.Cerebellum
6.Brain stem – Pons and Medulla oblongata
What are the 3 steps of human brain development (as a foetus)(including day stamps)?
- The CNS develops -> embryonic neural tube. (22-23 days)
- The anterior end of the neural tube swells -> major divisions of the brain:
- The forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain. (30 days)
- (posterior end) of the tube -> spinal cord (180 days)
What does the forebrain foetus develop into?
The cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus
What does the midbrain foetus develop into?
superior and inferior colliculi
What does the hindbrain foetus develop into?
cerebellum, pons and medulla
How many cerebral hemispheres are there?
Two hemispheres (right and left)
What is the cerebrum’s function?
sensory perception, learning, memory,
Describe and explain the function of the cerebral cortex
Describe: Outer layer of grey matter and inner layer of white matter
Function: Increases surface area for processing information
Describe and explain the function of the corpus callous
Describe: made up of myelinated fibres
Explain: connects the two cerebral hemispheres
