The Brain Flashcards
The Hindbrain
Coordinates functions that are key to survival
Parts:
- Medulla
-Pons
- Cerebellum
Medulla
Part of the Hindbrain
Controls automatic processes such as breathing, swallowing, heart rate, and sneezing.
If damaged severely you can die
Pons
Part of the Hindbrain
Related to sleep and dreaming
- Sleep paralysis is linked to the Pons
Cerebellum
Part of the Hindbrain
Involved with balance and coordinated muscle movement
Ex. Alcohol affects the cerebellum which is why police will use the straight-line test.
The Midbrain
The midbrain is associated with vision, hearing, motor control, sleep/wake, arousal (alertness), and temperature regulation
-Helps prioritize different senses.
The Forebrain
Enables thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills
Parts:
-Thalamus
Thalamus
Relays information between motor and sensory
Limbic System
the part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses
Hypothalamus
Part of the limbic sysem
Hunger, thirst, regulates temp
