- Turkey (known as the Ottoman Empire at the time because of the control) but was slowly collapsing
What did Serbia do during Turkey’s control?
- revolted against Turkish rule
- became independent
Why did Serbia encourage Bosnia to revolt against Turkish rule?
- many Serbs lived there
What did Austria-Hungary use as an opportunity in 1908?
- a revolution in Turkey
What did Austria-Hungary do as a result of the revolution?
- annex Bosnia
Why did Austria-Hungary annex Bosnia?
- to stop Slav countries gaining independence
- this was due to it having many Slavs in its empire
Why did Serbia appeal to Russia for help?
- it was angry with Austria-Hungary’s decision
Why was Russia annoyed with Austria-Hungary?
- also was interested in ruling Slavs
Why did Russia and Serbia back down when the ‘blank cheque’ was signed?
- no prepared to risk war with Germany
- feared its full support in Austria-Hungary
What did Russia do in a result of being humiliated by Germany and letting down Serbia?
- determined it wouldn’t happen again
- set about making military improvments
Why did Austria-Hungary become more confident?
-felt that Germany would back it in future

- Bosnians determined to win independence
- Serbia determined to oppose Austria-Hungary
- Austria-Hungary looking for an excuse to crush Serbia and eventually found one (assassination)
