The Body's Primary Line of Defense Flashcards
Skin
The skin is one of the main and biggest physical barriers.
It covers nearly all of your body and prevents pathogens from getting in.
It the skin is broken then scabs form to make sure that no organism can enter the bloodstream.
Nose
The nose has internal hairs, that act as a barrier to infection
The cells in the nose produce mucus which traps organisms trying to get into the body via the nose.
When the nose is blown the mucus is removed with all the pathogens trapped inside it.
Any remaining mucus and trapped pathogens go down the food pipe and into the stomach where it is broken down by acid.
Cilia
Cilia are tiny hairs in our airways that move mucus up to the throat
The cilia do this by getting a substance from the goblet cell which the mucus sticks to
The cilia then move in such a way that the mucus travels up the throat
Eyes
Tears are a primary barrier against pathogens and harmful organisms.
The eye produces tears that contain enzymes.
The tear washes the eye and picks up the bacteria and kills it with its enzymes.
Stomach
Stomach acid is classed the first line of defense even though it is inside your body.
It produces hydrochloric acid which can kill bacteria that comes in via the mouth or the mucus and pathogens from the lungs of the nose.
