The Blood Flashcards
Name the three major components of the blood
Red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma
What is the appearance of blood plasma?
Yellow watery liquid
What is blood plasma mostly made up of?
Water
Name the other substances that can be found in blood plasma
- glucose
- amino acids
- respiratory gases (mostly CO2)
- proteins
- ions
What is plasma known as when pushed through the thing walls of capillaries?
Tissue fluid
What causes blood plasma to be pushed through capillary walls?
High pressure in the surrounding arterioles and capillaries
When blood plasma is pushed through the capillary wall, what is this process known as?
Pressure filtration
What are the components of tissue fluid?
- dissolved gases (oxygen, CO2)
- glucose
- amino acids
- ions
- hormones
- waste products (urea)
Does tissue fluid have a higher or lower water concentration?
Higher
Why does tissue fluid have a higher water concentration?
Because it contains no proteins
Why does tissue fluid contain no proteins?
Because when passing through the capillary wall the proteins are too big
Does blood plasma have a high or low water concentration?
Low
Why does blood plasma have a low water concentration?
Because there are many proteins
How is excess tissue fluid absorbed?
By nearby lymphatic vessels
How does the tissue fluid return from the cells?
Osmosis
