the blood Flashcards
what is the function of the blood
Blood transports materials and heat around the body, and helps to protect against disease
what is the blood made up of?
plasma, red and white bloode cells and platelets
plasma function
Transporting carbon dioxide, digested food, urea, hormones and heat
red blood cells function
transporting oxygen for aerobic respiratiob
white blood cells function
ingesting pathogens and producing antibodies
platelets function
involed in blood clotting
adaptations of red blood cell (diffusion of oxygen)
they contain haemoglobin - red protein that combines with oxygen. no nucleus so they can contain more haemoglobin. small and flexible so can fit through narrow blood vessels. biconcave shape to maximise their surface area for oxygen absorption
reversible oxygen and haemoglobin reaction
haemoglobin + oxygen oxyhaemoglobin
how are platelets involved in blood clotting
enzyme controlled reactions convert fibrinogen into fibrin. network of protein fibres that capture many red blood cells and platelets form a clot that stops you from bleeding to death. clot dries and hardens to form scab, protects new skin while growing. stops bacteria entering body through wound
