What were the main symptoms of the Black Death?
Buboes, fever, aching, delirium, vomiting blood and eventually death.
What was the Black Death blamed on?
Astrology, god, miasma, theory of the four humours, earthquakes etc
What treatments/cures were attempted?
Praying, carrying posies to purify the air, bloodletting or purging (four humours), fasting, confessions, herbal remedies
What precautions did authorities put in place?
Any new people to the area stayed quarantined for 40 days & houses in areas of outbreak were quarantined, strangers not allowed to enter village, stopped cleaning streets (smells would drive away plague), large crowds banned, huge burial sites (very fast).
Why were the authorities’ precautions difficult to put in place?
The church had a lot of power and many people chose to follow their advice which includes praying, fasting etc.
