The Biological Approach Flashcards
Assumptions
- Everything psychological is at first biological
An understanding of brain structure and function can explain our thoughts and behaviour - The mind lives in the brain–> all thoughts, feelings and behaviour have a physical basis
Genetic Basis of Behaviour
Study whether behavioural characteristics are inherited the same way as physical characteristics
Twin studies are used to determine the likelihood that certain traits have a genetic basis by comparing concordance rates
Genotype and Phenotype
Genotype- actual genetic make up
Phenotype- way that genes are expressed through physical, behavioural and psychological characteristics
Evolution and Behaviour
The changes in inherited characteristics in a biological population over successive generations
Proposed by Charles Darwin
Theory of Natural Selection
AO3- Biological Approach
Scientific Method
Makes use of precise and highly scientific methods
i.e scanning techniques (fMRI, EEG), twin studies, drug trials
It’s possible to accurately measure biological and neural processes in ways that aren’t open to bias
AO3- Biological Approach
Real World Application
Led to the development of psychoactive drugs that treat serious mental disorders such as depression
They have revolutionised treatment for many
People with mental disorders are able to manage their condition and live a relatively normal life rather than remain in hospital
AO3- Biological Approach
Deterministic
It sees human behaviour as governed by internal, biological causes over which we have no control
Implications for the legal system and wider society
The discovery of the criminal gene may complicate what is viewed as morally right or wrong
