Why did Khrushchev want the western allies out of berlin

A

Thousands of people had escaped from East Germany to West Germany due to not wanting to live in a communist country

Many of those who escaped were well educated people who were essential for communist countries to progress it also made the East seem inferior

It stopped east germans from escaping to the west

Khrushchev looked strong but didn’t have to fight a war

The wall became a powerful symbol of communist strength

However it also could show how the west was better as they had to build a wall to stop people crossing

There wasnt much he could do but he did go to berlin in 1963 and make a speech (ich bin ein berliner) to demonstrate his sympathies and ordered three increases in the US defence budget

Also the leaders were able to develop relationships and have an optimistic outlook on a peaceful and cooperative future.
