THE BEHAVIOR OF LIGHT Flashcards
It is the bouncing back of light when
it hits a boundary of another
medium
reflection
It is the bending of the path of
a light wave as it passes from one
material into another material.
Refraction
It only takes place when both of the
following two conditions are met: the light is
in the denser medium and approaching the
less dense medium. The angle of incidence is
greater than the so-called critical angle.
Total Internal Reflection
It is the passing of light through a material
without being absorbed. For instance, an incoming light will just pass through a glass window as transmitted light.
Transmission
It occurs when light strikes a material, and
the energy that it carries is absorbed by the
atoms of the material and is converted into
thermal energy.
Absorption
It is the separation of visible light into its different colors.
Upon passage through the prism, the white light is separated into its component colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (ROYGBIV).
Dispersion
Scattering
It occurs when sunlight are redirected by the
particles suspended in the atmosphere called
_____.
scattering
called scatterers
is the scattering of light
by particles in a medium, without a change
in wavelength
Rayleigh scattering
This occurs when light hits a
water drop, aerosol, or other particle in the
atmosphere whose diameter is around the
same as the wavelength of the light.
Mie scattering
____ scattering is responsible
for blue skies;
____ scattering is
for white clouds.
Rayleigh
mei
lIt is the slight bending of light
around barriers.
For diffraction to be noticeable, the wavelength of light must be approximately the same or bigger than the slit or the opening of the barriers
Diffraction
It is when two waves meet
while travelling through the
same medium. It may be
constructive or destructive.
Interference
is the interference of two or more waves of equal frequency and phase, resulting in their mutual reinforcement and producing a single amplitude equal to the sum of the amplitudes of the individual waves.
Constructive interference
is the interference of two waves of equal frequency and opposite phase, resulting in their cancellation where the negative displacement of one always coincides with the positive displacement of the other.
Destructive interference
