Hunters and gatherers
A group of people who hunt animals and gather plants and other resources
Semi-sedentary societies
They have various sized villages and they plant/harvest crops and they hunt/fish
Mississippian culture
Big, densely populated mound buildings. Hunted, gathered, and planted/harvested crops
Algonquian
The Algonquian Native Americans are the most extensive and numerous North American groups with hundreds of original tribes speaking several related dialects of the language group
The term “Algonquian” refers to “A place for spearing fishes and eels.”
Iroquois Confederacy
Known to the English as the five nations, then added the Tuscarora people and became known as the six nations. They helped in the European Colonization
Protestant Reformation
16th century European movement made by Western Christians aimed initially at reforming the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church
Counter-Reformation
also known as the Catholic Reformation or the Catholic Revival, was the period of Catholic resurgence that was initiated in response to the Protestant Reformation.
Columbian Exchange
named for Christopher Columbus, was the widespread transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, technology, diseases, and ideas between the Americas, West Africa, and the Old World in the 15th and 16th centuries
Encomienda System
Encomienda System was a Spanish labor system. It rewarded conquerors with the labor of particular groups of subject people. It was first established in Spain following the Christian conquest of Muslim territories. It was applied on a much larger scale during the Spanish colonization of the Americas and the Philippines
Casta System
The Spanish Empire adopted a Casta System to classify all of the Americas’ various races and racial combinations. Similar to medieval Spain’s concept of limpieza de sangre, or blood purity, the Casta System linked one’s race with his or her behavior, personality, and social status
Chattel Slavery
Chattel slavery, also called traditional slavery, is so named because people are treated as the chattel (personal property) of the owner and are bought and sold as commodities. Typically, under the chattel slave system, slave status was imposed on children of the enslaved at birth

A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies is an account written by the Spanish Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas (published in 1552) about the mistreatment of and atrocities committed against the indigenous peoples of the Americas
Salutary Neglect
