- Building materials are recycled/renewable (wood)
- Materials are sourced locally (35 miles off site) cutting carbon emissions from travel

Instead of AC what does BedZED have?
Large vents on top of the housing for cool air in the summer.
Where do all the houses face and why?
All the houses face south to maximise the heat gain from the sun, especially in winter.
How and with what are the houses insulated?
The houses are well insulated with triple glazing.
How much is water use reduced to?
76 litres a day
How much of the water used is rain water ?
18%
What are the plants that are on the roofs and what do they do?
Sedum plants absorb the rain water and it is then harvested and the water is re-used for toilets and watering plants.
What sustainable ways does BedZED get their energy?
- Solar panels
* Heat from burning wood chipping which would otherwise go to waste.
How has BedZED made transport more sustainable?
- Easy access to public transport.
- Car clubs, pay as you drive schemes encouraging carpooling.
