anthony’s attractiveness chp 1?

Anthony’s arrogance chp 1?

anthonys interested in women who sell their beauty chp 2?

A

T]o Anthony life was a struggle against death, that waited at every corner.

One of those men devoid of the symmetry of feature essential to the Aryan ideal, he was yet, here and there, considered handsome

“in which he thinks himself rather an exceptional young man, thoroughly sophisticated, well adjusted to his environment, and somewhat more significant than any one else he knows”

any girl who made a living directly on her prettiness interested him enormously.

Q

dicks philosophy on women chp 3?

anthonys lack of ambition and loneliness chp 3?

A

[Dick says] the biography of every woman begins with the first kiss that counts, and ends when her last child is laid in her arms

There was one of his lonelinesses coming, one of those times when he walked the streets or sat, aimless and depressed, biting a pencil at his desk. It was a self-absorption with no comfort, a demand for expression with no outlet, a sense of time rushing by, ceaselessly and wastefully—assuaged only by that conviction that there was nothing to waste, because all efforts and attainments were equally valueless

Q

Anthony’s apartment chp 1?

Anthony’s description of old adam patch and general ageing view chp 1?

anthony’s view of the beautiful woman across the street chp 1?

A

The front room had fine high ceilings and three large windows that loomed down
pleasantly upon Fifty-second Street.

“The span of his seventy-five years had acted as a magic bellows—the first
quarter-century had blown him full with life, and the last had sucked it all back. It
had sucked in the cheeks and the chest and the girth of arm and leg”

Anthony admires the beauty of the woman in the other room and acknowledges the fact that he likes that she is far away, shows his isolation and fear to get close to people, his fixation on appearances rather than reality.

“He felt persistently that the girl was beautiful—then of a sudden he
understood: it was her distance, not a rare and precious distance of soul but still

distance, if only in terrestrial yards.”

This illusion is broken when she stands up and he realizes she is

“fat, full thirty-five, utterly undistinguished”

Highlights anthony’s over obsession with beauty and appearance and how this desire for beauty will likely lead to disappointment and is not rooted in reality.

Q

mr gilberts view of gloria and his wife chp 2?

mrs gilbert worry her daughter growing cold after surrounding herself with less desireable men and not caring

A

He disapproved of Gloria: she stayed out late, she never ate her meals, she was
always in a mix-up—he had irritated her once and she had used toward him words
that he had not thought were part of her vocabulary. His wife was easier. After
fifteen years of incessant guerilla warfare he had conquered her

“She seemed - and it was so strange - she seemed to her mother to be growing cold” - Declining tastes and standard of men she is spending time with – sense of desperation growing as she ages.
She doesn’t care about her reputation and in doing so rejects societal expectations of her.

A

“‘Don’t you want to preserve old things?’
‘But you can’t Anthony. Beautiful things grow to a certain height and then they fail and fade off, breathing out memories as they decay’”

“He tried to recapture that ecstatic sensation of ten weeks before. All these emotions eluded him, he did not even feel the physical nervousness of that very morning - it was all one gigantic aftermath”

finis diary gloria chp 4?

anthony ny chp 4?

gloria mans mind chp 4?

A

After a moment she found a pencil and holding it unsteadily drew three parallel lines beneath the last entry. Then she printed FINIS in large capitals, put the book back in the drawer, and crept into bed.

This diary acts for Gloria, like Anthony, as a form of escapism as she delves back into the past loves and romances
of her life. Clearly unsure about what her next steps should be, she dwells on past romances and seeks to convince
herself that marrying Anthony is the right move for her; who is already finding her options dwindling in number.

But it’s really a transparent, artificial sort of spectacle….. Technically excellent, perhaps, but not convincing

Oh much better, I’ve got a man’s mind

glorias relief wedding day chp 4?

reality of hating each other chp 4?

A

And then, one fairy night, May became June. Sixteen days now—fifteen—fourteen—

she could have wept for her mother, who was crying quietly back there ten feet

that the ultimately important was happening - and a trust, fierce and passionate, burning in her like a prayer, that in a moment she would be forever and securely safe

Anthony knew that there were days when they hurt each other purposely - taking almost a delight in the thrust

anthony mad at glorias selfishness chp 5?

Adam patch asking anthony what hes done chp 5?

A

In his mind was but one idea - that Gloria was being selfish, that she was always being selfish and would continue to be unless here and now he asserted himself as her master …. His determination solidified, approached momentarily a dull and sullen hate

“‘Well what have you been doing?’ he asked anthony blandly. ‘Nothing? Well i thought so”

A

She was a sun, radiant, growing, gathering light and storing it - then after an eternity pouring it forth in a glance, the fragment of a sentence, to that part of him that cherished all beauty and all illusion”

Just as he still cared for her more than any other creature, so did he more intensely and frequently hate her

money problems and alcohol chp 6?

leaving gray house chp 6?

anthonys view ny chp 6?

A

Things had been slipping perceptibly. There was the money question, increasingly annoying, increasingly ominous; there was the realization that liquor had become a practical necessity to their amusement

came a day in September, a day slashed with alternate sun and rain, sun without warmth, rain without freshness. On that day they left the gray house, which had seen the flower of their love

I always feel as though it’s a performance being staged for me; as though the second I’ve passed they’ll all stop leaping and laughing and, instead, grow very sad, remembering how poor they are, and retreat with bowed heads into their houses

anthonys reaction to being cut out the will chp 6?

wine for anthony and gloria chp 6?

A

There was, first of all, the sense of waste, always dormant in his heart, now awakened by the circumstances of his position. In his moments of insecurity he was haunted by the suggestion that life might be, after all, significant.

“He did it, God damn him!”

Wine gave a sort of gallantry to their own failure

how dot looks at anthony chp 7?

Anthony comforting Dot when hes leaving her ans she wants to die etc chp 7?

Anthony reflecting on the life he could have had chp 7?

A

Anthony’s affair with Dorothy Raycroft was an inevitable result of his increasing carelessness about himself…. He merely slid into the matter through his inability to make definite judgements

glances nearer to worship than any he had ever inspired

“You’ll forget. things are sweeter when they’re lost. I know - because once I wanted something and got it. It was the only thing I ever wanted badly, Dot. And when I got it it turned to dust in my hands.”

I suppose that at one time I could have had anything I wanted, within reason, but that was the only thing I ever wanted with any fervor. God!

anthony and glorias relationship once anthony got back from the army chp 8?

A

she gave way to a quiet pity for herself and her loneliness

After that reflowering of tenderness and passion each of them had returned into some solitary dream unshared by the other and what endearments passed between them passed, it seemed, from empty heart to empty heart, echoing hollowly the departure of what they knew at last was gone

gloria turning 29 and beauty chp 8?

Anthony’s refusal to work and wanting his grandfathers money chp 9?

anthony and stamps at the end after they won the trial chp 9?

A

She would be twenty-nine in February. The month assumed an ominous and inescapable significance - making her wonder… whether after all she had not wasted her faintly tired beauty, whether there was such a thing as use for any quality bounded by a harsh and inevitable mortality

Well, suppose I make fifty a week. Do you think I’d be any happier? Do you think that if I don’t get this money of my grandfather’s life will be endurable?

He held up a handful of stamps and let them come drifting down about him like leaves, varicoloured and bright, turning and fluttering gaudily upon the sunny air: stamps of England and Ecuador, Venezuela and Spain - Italy…

final line chp 9?

A

Only a few months before people had been urging him to give in, to submit to mediocrity, to go to work. But he had known that he was justified in his way of life

“I showed them,” he was saying. “It was a hard fight, but I didn’t give up and I came through!”

Q

Gloria never wanting children chp 8?

A

She knew that in her breast she had never wanted children. The reality, the earthiness, the intolerable sentiment of child- bearing, the menace to her beauty - had appalled her. She wanted to exist only as a conscious flower, prolonging and preserving itself
