UK - hold on to Ypres - vital in maintaining control of english channel ports
Germans - gained ground
What happened at the Battle on Hill 60 (April 1915)?
British - tunnelled into and under hill 60 - exploded five mines from tunnels - took the hill
What happened at the Second Battle of Ypres (April-May 1915)?
Germans - slight gain towards Ypres - used chlorine gas (first time it was ever used)
What happened at the Battle of the Somme (July-November 1916)?
Very high casualties - both sides
British - two new strategies - creeping barrage and first use of tanks - little impact
What happened at the Battle of Arras (April-May 1917)?
British - linked and expanded tunnels, quarries and caves for shelter and movement - used to launch battle - initially successful - ended with little progress
Very high casualties on both sides
What happened at the Third Battle of Ypres (July-November 1917)?
Large scale use of tanks - successful - not backed up so British forced back
What happened at the Battle of Cambrai (November-December 1917)?
British - creeping barrage - small gaim
awful weather - grounded waterlogged - many drowned
