Q

What is Down?

A

Down is the soft under plumage (a layer of insulation underneath fleece) that geese, ducks and other waterfowl have to keep them warm and dry.

It consists of light, fluffy filaments growing from a central quill point, thereby creating a 3-D structure which traps air and gives down its insulating ability.

Q

What is Fill Power?

A

Down is measured by its “Fill Power”, also known as “loft”, which is a measure of the down’s fluffiness.

More air gets trapped in down clusters with higher loft, making the down both lighter and warmer.

Q

How is Fill Power determined?

A

The Fill Power is determined by measuring how many cubic inches an ounce of down displaces when allowed to expand to its fullest.

E.g. If an ounce of down takes up 500 cubic inches of space, then it has a 500 fill power.
