The Basic Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 basic animal tissues?
Epithelial tissue
Connective tissue
Muscular tissue
Nervous tissue
What are the 4 basic plant tissues?
Dermal tissue
Ground tissue
Meristematic tissue
Vascular tissue
What is the function of the dermal tissue?
It is the area of microorganism interaction.
The cuticle acts as a transpiration barrier.
What are the 3 ground tissue types?
Collenchyma
Parenchyma
Sclerenchyma
What are the features of the collenchyma?
Thickened cell walls.
Found beneath the epidermis of the stem and leaves.
Acts as a flexible support system.
What are the features of the parenchyma?
Thin cell walls.
Large vacuoles.
Photosynthetic.
Used in wound repair.
What are the features of the sclerenchyma?
Thick cell walls.
Long slender cells.
Develop in association with xylem/phloem.
Provide structural support.
What is the function of the meristem?
The site of growth.
Contains undifferentiated parenchymal cells - plant equivalent of stem cells.
What are the 3 types of muscle cell?
Cardiac muscle.
Skeletal muscle.
Smooth muscle.
How many cells are there in the human body?
