northern, urban, industrial- emphasised socialist part of national socialism e.g. Goebbels and Strasser
southern, more rural areas emphasised nationalism e.g. Hitler

(because of location, mainly southern party leaders)

- northern leaders, like Strasser, allowed to put view forward
- Hitler made views clear - spoke for 5hrs
- Goebbels abandoned Strasser
