Caused by the interaction of solar particles and the earth’s atmosphere near the north and south.
The earth is surrounded by electromagnetic fields that are strongest near the north and south poles. The solar winds travelling toward earth become influences by, and follow the lines of magnetic force created by earth’s magnetic field. Near the poles, the come into contact with particles in the earth’s atmosphere, producing a display of light in the night sky.
