The Atom Flashcards
What is the definition of Atomic Number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Name the three types of particle found in an atom
Electrons
Protons
Neutrons
Give the relative masses of these three particles
Electrons - 1/2000
Protons - 1
Neutrons - 1
Give the relative charges of these three particles
Proton - +1
Neutron - 0
Electron - -1
State where in the atom these three particles can be found
Protons and Neutrons - nucleus
Electrons - in the orbitals
How can you work out the number of neutrons an atom has?
By subtracting the atomic number from the mass number
What are isotopes?
Atoms with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Why do isotopes have the same chemical properties?
Chemical properties are determined by the electrical configuration, isotopes have the same amount of electrons
Why do isotopes have different physical properties?
They are dependent on the mass, isotopes have different masses
What is the definition of Mass Number?
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
