The Atmosphere And The Oceans Chapter Eleven Unit. Four Section 11.1 Atmospheric Basics Flashcards
Troposphere
The layer closest to the earths surface. It contains most of the mass of the atmosphere
Stratosphere
A layer in which the air temperature increases with altitude and contains the ozone layer
Mesosphere
The layer above the stratopause is about 50 km to 100 km above earths surface. The air decreases with altitude.
Thermosphere
The layer between about 100 to 500 km above Earths surface.
Exosphere
The outermost layer of Earths atmosphere
Radiation
Is the transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves.
Conduction
Is the transfer between thermal objects when their atoms or molecules collide
Convection
The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of heated material from one place to another.
