7
Q

What is the enhanced GH effect

A

It occurs when excessive heat is retained due to increased amounts of GHG’s that humans have released into the atmosphere since the industrial revolution

8
Q

Ecological change

A

A shift in the way organisms interact with one another and their environment. The main causes are environmental changes

What is meltwater

A

water generated from the melting of snow and ice in glacierised catchments

13
Q

What does meltwater help do for glaciers

A

Water flows through the cracks in the ice to the bottom of the glacier where it can lubricate the ice as it slides over the rocks

15
Q

What causes thermal expansion on seawater

A

Some Heat that is trapped in the atmosphere can be absorbed by the sea and cause it to expand

16
Q

What is permafrost?

A

Ground that is permanently frozen

17
Q

What does melting permafrost do

A

Releases powerful GHG’s (CO2 and methane) and causes a positive feedback mechanism for global warming

18
Q

How can the decrease of the mass of ice (ice sheets) be measured?

A

We can use gravity. When ice sheets start to melt, the pull of gravity around that ice sheet is reduced.

19
Q

When the gravitational pull is reduced around an ice sheet, what happens?

A

The sea level drops around the ice sheet ( local drop) and this is balanced out by rising sea levels on the other side of Earth.

20
Q

How can we measure see ice loss

A

Remote sensing (cryosat); the use of IR microwaves to detect changes in sea ice
