The Atmosphere Flashcards
(36 cards)
Name the layers of the atmosphere
Thermosphere
Mesosphere
Stratosphere
Troposphere
What is the limit of the troposphere
It stops at the tropopause
Average 11km (Altho changes depending on where on earth)
What is the limit of the mesosphere?
The mesopause
Around 80km from earth’s surface
What is the limit of the stratosphere
The stratopause
Around 50km from the earth’s surface
What is within the stratosphere
Ozone which is Oxygen 3 molecules
What is the thermosphere
The furthest most layer of the atmosphere, extending into space
What is an ISA
International Standard Atomosphere
Mean sea level temp (MSLT)
15°C
Mean sea level pressure (MSLP)
1013.25 hPa
Mean sea level density (MSLD)
1.225 kg/m³
Temperature lapse rate
1.98°C per 1000ft
Or 6.5°C per km
This goes up to a tropopause constant of -56°C
Tropopause altitude
36090ft (36,000)ft
Pressure lapse rate
27ft / hPa
Density lapse rate
A non linear rate
22,000 ft is 50%
40,000 ft is 25%
What is the compositition of the atmosphere
- Nitrogen 78.09%
- Oxygen 20.95%
- Trace substances 0.96%
Define the atmosphere
A gaseous envelope surrounding and moving along with the earth and it has no specific upper limit
What are the main trace gases within the atmosphere
Hydrogen
Ozone
Water vapour (0-5% by volume)
Solid particles (dust, smoke, salt)
What is Ozone?
A molecule that is naturally occuring in the atmosphere that forms a protective barrier over the earths surface
What is a negative of Ozone?
It is a highly reactive and unstable gas capable of damaging living cells
What is the conversion of nm?
1 nautical mile = 1nm = 6080 ft = 1.852 km = 1852m
1m = 3.28ft
Which part of the atmosphere does temperature increases with height
The stratosphere
What happens to pressure with an increase in height
ALWAYS decreases with height increase
What happens to Temperature with an increase in height
ON AVERAGE decreases with height increase
What happens to density with an increase in height
ALWAYS decreases with height
