The Articles Of Confederation Flashcards
What were the pros of the Articles of Confederation?
*They provided a clear outline of powers in the central government.
*It was the first written constitution of a republic, and, as such, it kept the states together and kept the ideal of a union of states joined together alive.
*They allowed for mutual protection against foreign threats
*Permitted the settlement of western areas and established a procedure for the admission of new states into the Union.
What were the weaknesses of the Articles?
*Congress couldn’t pass a law unless nine states voted for it
*Any attempt to amend or change the Articles required all 13 states to agree
*Such strict voting made it hard to do anything
*Congress had little power to enforce laws even when passed
*Congress couldn’t force taxes on states
Why was there no easy solution when it came to creating a new government?
Nine states had to have consensus and almost of all of them never agreed to pass any changes
