- Arguments that focus on the source rather than the issue (“to the source”)
What is the Ad Hominem Abusive?
An ad fontem argument that attempts to avoid the issue by insulting an opponent with abusive language (“to the man”)
What is the Ad Hominem Circumstantial?
An ad fontem argument that tries to discredit an opponent because of his background, affiliations, or self-interest in the matter at hand (“to the man”)
What is Tue Quoque?
An ad fontem argument that assumes that a rival’s recommendation should be discounted because the rival does not always follow it himself (“you also”)
What is the genetic fallacy?
An ad fontem argument that states that an idea should be discounted simply because of its source or origin
