The Army plot Flashcards
1
Q
What was the army plot?
A
- On 3rd May more concrete rumours of an army parts were revealed by Pym to Parliament
- Pym revealed that a group of army officers with the king’s support had been plotting a Coup d’état
- Angered by Parliament‘s treatment of the King, the officers planned to bring the army south from York to London, free Strafford from the tower, and forcibly dissolve parliament
- The evidence for Charles‘s involvement was circumstantial
- on fifth of May Charles sent 100 soldiers to seize the Tower of London, but the tower was well defended and the plot collapsed
- it was enough to persuade the Lords to sign the Bill of Attainder. Strafford’s life was now in the hands of the King
